After the Japanese invaded his home town Foshan in part one of the movie series, Yip Man now finds himself in Hong Kong trying to teach and spread his Kung fu style called Wing Chun. In the beginning he has problems finding students due to his lack of reputation in Hong Kong and it takes a lot of fights and even a special ceremony to prove his skill to his colleagues, so he might finally lead his school without interference. A lot of his former enemies become his friends and followers due to his excellent fighting skills on the one hand, and the bigger enemy they all have in common, the British colonialists, on the other.
The films are loosely based on the life of Yip Man, the famous Wing Chun teacher, who is still popular in China today, a hundred years after his birth in 1893. He was considered one of the first masters to teach Wing Chun openly and taught many famous martial artists, who later went on to become teachers themselves and open their own martial art schools. One of Yip Man's most famous pupils was the Kung fu legend Bruce Lee, who learned the Wing Chun style from his master before developing his own style Jeet Kune Do. The movies about Yip Man's life have lead to a new wave of popularity resulting in a third Yip Man movie, neither starring Donnie Yen not directed by Wilson Yip, and other film projects dealing with the grandmaster's life.
